Mō te tūnga | About the role
Ara Poutama Aotearoa/the Department of Corrections works actively with government partners, particularly Police and the Ministry of Justice, as well as the non-government sector.
This means you'll work on a diverse range of public policy projects with a variety of audiences.
This vacancy is in the Strategic Policy team.
The Strategic Policy team advises the Minister of Corrections, as well as senior leaders and other departmental decision-makers, both on urgent matters and longer-term strategic issues.
This requires us to develop policy advice for senior leaders, and the Minister of Corrections and Cabinet, that has a tangible impact on the people in our management.
The team is also responsible for writing strategic documents such as the Annual Report and Strategic Intentions as well as preparing Briefings to Incoming Ministers.
The successful candidate will work on a broad range of criminal justice policy issues, some led by Corrections, and others led by the wider sector.
In the past year, for example, our policy unit has responded to proposals relating to bail settings, mental health provisions, youth offenders, organised crime, and immigration settings.
Mōu | About you
We are looking for someone with 2-3 years of policy experience.
We encourage you to apply for this role if you have demonstrable experience in applying policy development processes to the analysis of policy issues and preparing high-quality policy advice.
Experience drafting strategic documents such as Annual Reports, Strategic Intentions, or Briefings to Incoming Ministers would be beneficial.
You must also have experience working with policy staff from other government agencies to progress legislative change.

You should also have an understanding of Māori policy issues in the justice sector, or be willing to learn.

Utu ā-tau | Salary
The midpoint of the salary range is $104,897 per annum and the full range (85%-120%) is $89,163 - $125,877 per annum.
Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
