Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

We are seeking an intensivist with an interest in care of the deteriorating patient outside of the intensive care. This role combines work as a specialist intensivist within a busy tertiary intensive care, and specialist engagement with the Patient at Risk team in our hospital.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine cares for approx. **** patients every year. Our case mix includes all adult tertiary specialties apart for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery (provided by another ICU in Auckland City Hospital), burns and plastic surgery (provided by another ICU in the Auckland region). There is particular emphasis on neuro-intensive care, tertiary surgical and medical services, trauma, and abdominal organ transplantation.

The Patient at Risk team coordinates care for deteriorating adult patients across the whole hospital. This team attends over **** medical emergency codes annually and ensures timely and appropriate care is provided to patients. The specialist role involves providing clinical leadership alongside the nursing and operational leadership, contributing to education and training of the multidisciplinary team and contributing to the development and improvement of the care provided to deteriorating patients.

This position is a permanent full time position. Twenty hours a week, on average, are allocated to the PaR role and the remainder is allocated to the intensivist role in the DCCM.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Essential skills/qualifications

Have an ICU qualification that is recognised for specialist registration in New Zealand

Have FCICM and vocational registration in New Zealand. A deferred starting date could be offered to a candidate with a clearly identified and readily achievable pathway to this requirement.

Provide tertiary level intensive care knowledge and skills to patients within intensive care and to patients on the wards as required

Participate in a rotating senior medical staff roster

Participate in junior medical staff and nursing staff supervision and teaching

Participate in intensive care unit activities related to quality, data, audit

Develop and provide leadership in one area of intensive care that will enhance our ability to provide the best outcome for our patients.

As the ideal candidate, you will be either registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Please note, you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application.
