Position Purpose The Machine Shop Supervisor supports the Operations Manager – Manufacturing by overseeing the daily operations of machining and fabrication activities at Thermosash’s Levin facility. The role ensures that safety, quality, and productivity standards are consistently achieved through effective coordination of people, equipment, and workflow.

This position provides hands-on supervision across multiple machining areas, supporting Team Leaders and machinists to deliver against production targets while maintaining compliance with ISO 9001, Lean, and Thermosash operational standards. The Supervisor actively promotes a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration within the manufacturing team.

Role responsibilities Safety – Zero Harm

Lead a proactive, safety-first culture through visible engagement on the shop floor.

Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and company procedures.

Conduct regular safety inspections and monthly critical risk–focused safety tours.

Verify all staff have required training, permits, and certifications before work commences.

Ensure incidents, hazards, and near misses are reported promptly in Safety Culture, with corrective actions closed out.

Reinforce PPE use and safe operating practices at all times.

People and Leadership

Supervise machine shop Team Leaders and machining personnel to meet daily and weekly production targets.

Build a high-performing, positive, and engaged team culture that reflects Thermosash values.

Provide on-the-job coaching, performance feedback, and mentoring to Team Leaders and machinists.

Manage daily resourcing, leave requests, and shift coordination to maintain operational coverage.

Support recruitment, onboarding, and skills development across the machine shop.

Identify and develop potential successors and future leaders within the team.

Production and Workflow Management

Oversee daily workflow scheduling to ensure production plans and DIFOT targets are met.

Allocate resources efficiently across machines, ensuring optimal labour and equipment utilisation.

Coordinate material availability with Logistics and Procurement to prevent production delays.

Monitor performance data (TPM / ERP) and address bottlenecks or downtime quickly.

Ensure equipment maintenance tasks are completed to maintain reliability and compliance.

Quality and Continuous Improvement

Maintain strict adherence to machining specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.

Conduct in-process and final inspections in line with QA/QC procedures.

Prevent substandard work from progressing through production and lead corrective action reviews.

Champion Lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Support the development and roll-out of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Operational Reporting and Coordination

Provide regular updates to the Operations Manager – Manufacturing on output, resourcing, and performance issues.

Participate in production planning meetings and contribute operational insights.

Ensure TPM and ERP systems are accurately updated with production and labour data.

Maintain strong communication with other production areas to support cross-functional workflow.

Contribute to the safe commissioning of new equipment, tools, or processes.

Qualifications, certifications and experience

Essential

 Relevant trade qualification in engineering, machining, or fabrication.

 Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.

 At least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.

 Proven ability to manage teams, schedules, and resources effectively.

 Sound technical knowledge of CNC and manual machining processes.

 Experience with TPM, ERP, or similar production management systems.

 Strong understanding of QA/QC procedures and ISO 9001 standards.

 Knowledge of Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.

 Demonstrated health and safety leadership in a manufacturing environment.

Desirable

 Diploma or degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.

 Exposure to Just-In-Time (JIT) scheduling and Lean methodologies.

 Forklift and overhead crane certification.

 Experience in MPI Transitional Facility compliance.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Measures combined equipment availability, performance efficiency, and product quality to assess overall operational effectiveness. ≥ 80% (or site benchmark)

Unplanned Downtime / Machine Downtime Rate Tracks total hours of machine unavailability due to breakdowns or unscheduled maintenance as a proportion of available operating time. ≤ 5% of available time

Cost of Non-Conformance (Scrap & Rework Rate) Measures cost and volume of waste, scrap, or rework relative to total production output to maintain cost efficiency and product quality. ≤ 3% of total production cost

The Wage Range foir tis role is between $36-$39 per hour gross
